As per requested from Yangon University Open Political Society, CDES hosted two-day long workshop intensively for the students during weekend (20-21 Oct 2018) in order for them to participate without any workload from their studies. There were 20 students attending from International Relation and Political Science department of Dagon University, East Yangon University, and Yangon University respectively.

In light of important political transformations happening in Myanmar, it’s crucial that youth are politically aware, explained and empowered that was part of a recent workshop for young people on federalism and peace.

The Centre for Development and Ethnic Studies (CDES) firmly believes that it’s important to feed the minds of the next generation because “today’s youths may become leaders tomorrow”.

Thawng Tha Lian, Program Manager of CDES said, “I want youth to have a full understanding of what is federalism and peace while the federal union is building. Federalism and peace are related. Peace cannot be obtained without the establishment of a federal union in Myanmar.”

Lecturers are the senior staff member of the CDES (Ngun Lian Sang – Executive Director, Dr. Lian H. Sakhong – Senior Adviser, Dr. Moses C. Tehlo – Research Director) who have intensively experienced teaching on democracy, federalism, human rights and peace.

Discussions included the background and history of the Union of Myanmar, Democracy, self-determination and ethnic equality, federation and confederation, the distribution of power for building a federal union; the importance of Amyotha Hluttaw (parliament); political dialogue; and whether state constitutions are needed or not for a federal union in Myanmar.
