State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met briefly on Wednesday with the leader of the Karen National Union, which temporarily suspended participation in the peace process recently.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of a peace forum held in Nay Pyi Taw, at which both the State Counsellor and KNU leader Saw Mutu Say Poe spoke.   

“The chairman of the KNU and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met for a short time during the tea break. They did not discuss any particular topic but exchanged greetings and normal conversation,” said Padoh Mahn Nyein Maung, second general secretary of the KNU’s Central Executive Committee. “They did not talk about politics.” 

The meeting was the first between the State Counsellor and KNU leader since the armed ethnic group decided last month to temporarily pull out of the peace process. The KNU is one of the more powerful armed ethnic groups in the country.

Observers said the meeting breathed hope into the floundering government-initiated peace talks that have made no significant progress over the past two years.

Another armed ethnic group, the Restoration Council of Shan State-Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA), also said recently that it is reviewing its participation in the peace talks.

Eight other armed ethnic groups have signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), which is a precondition for participating in the peace process.

Other armed groups have not signed the NCA.   

Two days before the Nay Pyi Taw forum, government peace negotiators met with representatives of the 10 NCA signatories and some non-signatories in Chiang Mai, Thailand. 

U Zaw Htay, the spokesperson for the President’s Office, said the meeting ended on a positive note, with all the groups reaffirming their determination to achieve peace.  

“Both sides discussed how to keep moving forward on the NCA path,” he said.

ေနရာေပးမည္

ဗုိလ္ခ်ဳပ္ႀကီးေစာမူတူးေစးဖုိးသည္ တစ္ႏုိင္ငံလုံးပစ္ခတ္တုိက္ခုိက္မႈရပ္စဲေရးသေဘာတူစာခ်ဳပ္ကုိ လက္မွတ္ေရး ထိုးထားသည့္ တုိင္းရင္းသားလက္နက္ကုိင္အဖြဲ႕အစည္းမ်ား၏ ၿငိမ္းခ်မ္းေရးလုပ္ငန္းစဥ္ ဦးေဆာင္အဖြဲ႕ (PPST) ၏ ဥကၠ႒တာဝန္ယူထားသူျဖစ္သည္။ လက္ရွိတြင္ ၎အေနျဖင့္ ထုိတာဝန္မွ အနားယူကာ ကရင္အမ်ဳိးသားအစည္းအ႐ုံး၏ အေထြေထြအတြင္းေရးမွဴးခ်ဳပ္ ပဒုိေစာတာဒုိမူးအား PPST တြင္ ေနရာေပးမည္ဟု သိရသည္။

“ဥကၠ႒ႀကီးက အနားယူမယ္လုိ႔ေတာ့ သတင္းထြက္ေနတာေပါ့ဗ်ာ။ ဒါေပမဲ့ ဒါဟာ တရားဝင္ေတာ့ မဟုတ္ေသး ပါဘူး၊ တရားဝင္ျဖစ္ဖုိ႔ PPST အစည္းအေဝးေခၚၿပီးေတာ့ အတည္ျပဳဖို႔ လိုတာေပါ့ ”ဟု ဗုိလ္မွဴးႀကီးခြန္ဥကၠာက ေျပာဆုိ သည္။

အတည္ျပဳေျပာဆုိ

ေကအင္န္ယအေထြေထြအတြင္းေရးမွဴးခ်ဳပ္ျဖစ္သူ ပဒုိေစာတာဒုိမူးကုိ PPST တြင္ ေနရာေပးေရးကုိ ႏုိဝင္ဘာ လဆန္းပုိင္းက ျပဳလုပ္ခဲ့ေသာ ေကအင္န္ယူ၏ ေျခာက္ႀကိမ္ေျမာက္ ဗဟုိအၿမဲတမ္းေကာ္မတီ၏ အေရးေပၚအစည္း အေဝးက ဆုံးျဖတ္ခဲ့ျခင္းျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း ေကအင္န္ယူဗဟုိအလုပ္အမႈေဆာင္ ပဒုိမန္းၿငိမ္းေမာင္က အတည္ျပဳေျပာဆုိသည္။
