Dr. Lian H. Sakhong

Senior Adviser

Dr. Lian H. Sakhong is a Martin Luther King Prize awardee (Sweden) and an internationally recognized peace advocate, author, trainer, lecturer and resource person with strong expertise on democracy, federalism and peace. His devotion to peace is defined by his endless advocacy and commitment for the peace process in Myanmar. He was one of the members of the 88 Generation Democracy Movement, founded the Centre for Development and Ethnic Studies, is a former member of the Nationwide Ceasefire Coordination Team, and is currently the vice-chairman of the Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee (UPDJC) as well as the vice-chairman of the Chin National Front (CNF). 


Dr. Lian H. Sakhong has written numerous books, articles and papers on the political and social situation in modern Burma, in both English and Burmese. Among his books published in English are: Religion and Politics among the Chin People in Burma (Uppsala University, 2000), In Search of Chin Identity: A Study in Religion, Politics and Ethnic Identity in Burma (Copenhagen: Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, 2003), In Defence of Identity: Ethnic Nationalities’ Struggle for Democracy, Human Rights and Federalism in Burma (Bangkok: Orchid Press, 2010), The New Panglong Initiative: Re-building the Union of Burma (together with Dr. Chao-Tzang Yawnghwe, 2002), Designing Federalism in Burma (together with David Williams, 2003), and Ending Ethnic Armed Conflict in Burma (together with Paul Keenan, 2014).
